Laughter in the Kitchen (part 1)

I don’t know about you, but I really enjoy cooking. But as you know, anyone who has done any amount of cooking has their share of cooking mistakes. I know I’ve run into mine. In fact, I plan to do a post sharing some of my hilarious stories from the kitchen, that weren’t so hilarious at the time that it happened. Right now I don’t have the time, so instead I ask you to leave a comment and share some of your best and funniest cooking mistakes and stories from the kitchen. I’m sure that if you’ve ever cooked at all then you have at least one story to tell, so please don’t be shy. I want to hear the men’s cooking stories too, not just the women’s. After ya’ll share some of your stories, which I very much look forward to reading and laughing over, I will come back and post some of mine and you can laugh all you want.

Also I have a question that has nothing to do with cooking. How do you do a “Give Away” on blogspot? If any one has done a Give Away on blogspot, then I would appreciate if you left a comment and told me how you did it. I have never done a Give Away before, but really want to do it; I just don’t know how to go about it. Thanks for your help!

  1. Oh boy, here we go...
I am not famous for goofs - just messes. Oh boy, its the worst at Christmas. Its a tradition that we go to a friends house and bake cookies, and one requires powdered sugar and LOTS of it. I'm telling you TONS of it.
Well, we've gotten better in recent years, but we've had it so nearly the whole kitchen looked like it had snowed (really) and we had white footprints on the carpet, and the little kids are on the floor (tile floor in kitchen) licking up the powdered sugar as fast as they can. Then, when told to go wash up our hands and arms, we'd lick it all off first, then clean up what we couldn't get in our mouths.
That much powdered sugar gets to you after a while..... Its almost toxicly sweet.
So! That's the best I could think of off the top of my head. I am sure there are others, but that's all for now!
As for giveaways, I have no idea - never done them!

    3. Thanks for sharing that story, God's Country Boy! I enjoyed it very much! It does sound like something we would do! And, of course, we don't believe in wasting so we always make sure to lick everything clean. ;)

  2. Mine is really embarrassing :)

When I was younger (much younger), I was making banana bread all by myself, and thought I had done a very good job of it!! Until I realized that instead of 10 Tbsps of butter, I'd added 10 cups!!!! Oops. Trying to double a recipe when you're a little one can be quite challenging, ya know.

My mom opened the oven door, and there was a little wad of dough floating in a pan full of butter. :P

    Taught me!! LOL

    1. Haha, Lisa! Wow! 10 cups of butter instead of 10 tablespoons. That is an awful lot! I don't believe I have ever had to use that much butter before! ;)

  3. Once I decided to make Butternut Squash Bisque. Instead of following a recipe, I looked at a few and then made my own. The only problem is that this bisque contained things like, squash (of course), onions, and... orange juice. I should have stopped there, but after trying it, it honestly wasn't the worst thing I've ever made, so I made my roommates try it. They hated it. Then I decided to bring the rest to some of my girl friends. This strange action was motivated partly by the slim chance (why does slim chance and fat chance mean the same thing?) that they would like it, and mainly by my desire to eliminate the substance (speaking of "substance" I have another story.) The poor little darlings thought it was disgusting but didn't want to hurt my feelings so they kept it and pretended to like it. When I found it in there frig a few weeks later, I believe I gave them a good scolding.

Now for the substance. Once, while surviving in the wilderness which is the boundary waters above MN, we caught a few of the most fishy fish, coated them in our pre-made fish batter, and cooked them. But when the fish were gone, we still had more batter, so we put it in tin foil and cooked. It became... well... substance. Some sort of salty, grity, breadlike substance.

Another time, me and a couple friends went to visit this girl whom I really liked. We decided to bring desert and I wanted to impress her with some good apple crisp. You can't normally go wrong with apple crisp. In fact, I usually receive many compliments. But this time I decided to put walnuts on top, like a whole bag of them. This coupled with the fact that the apples were particularly bland, made the crisp taste like one enormous walnut.

That's it for today. Can't wait to hear yours. I know they are many.

    1. Haha, Gabriel! Those are some good stories! I'm sure I could remind you of some more concoctions that you have made, too. ;)I don't blame the girls for not eating that Butternut Squash Bisque. I don't believe I would eat it either, unless it was for my dear brothers sake! ;)

  4. Hannah, I like your picture of you and Gabriel making mud pies! I guess that was one of your earlier cooking experiences! A little messy but a lot of fun!

  5. Well, once, on my day to cook dinner, I decided to make a chicken pie with some leftover chicken. I also wanted to use up other leftovers in the fridge. One of these happened to be some sort of Chinese stir-fry that didn’t taste the best in my and several other’s opinions. So I put that into the mixture, which was already of great quantity, because, hey, it would use up the stir-fry and also add veggie’s to the meal. Great idea, right? Well I ended up making two large pans of stir-fry chicken pie that night. I would freeze the one we didn’t eat for the next time I needed an easy meal! When Mom came home (for she had been gone, or this may not have happened at all) she said, “You put what in the pie?!” At dinner that night everyone politely thanked me for the meal and quietly tried to swallow. There was a loud groan when they learned they where not seeing the last of it for quite a while yet! Let’s see, is there still more in the freezer now?

    And another….

This time it is Easter and my brother is bringing a Korean friend home from college to enjoy a meal and the afternoon with our family. Easter is a time to celebrate so I decided to make a beautiful, delicious looking cake from scratch. Well I didn’t read the recipe carefully so I did not know that it said it had to be refrigerated over night. It ended up that the icing was so soupy that the layers did not stay stacked like they where supposed to so we had to transfer the mess of dare-I-call-it-cake to a bowl. There was much laughing over that cake and I’m sure that my brother’s friend went home appreciating his Mother’s cooking like never before!

    1. Haha! Yes, Priscilla, I remembering having to suffer through those days of having to eat that Stir-fry Chicken pie! ;) Just kidding! It actually wasn't so bad after all. And thanks for not blaming me for it. ;)

  6. I too have made many cooking mistakes. haha I have NEVER made anything un-edible (except for that pudding I burned), but MOST dishes I make turn out slightly different than the recipe, tilted, too fluffy, or something of that nature. This is a "too fluffy story". I was at Faith's house making brownies. We were a little confused on the recipe her mom had passed to us verbally in the first place, but the real trouble came due to the fact that I used the electric mixer to stir the batter versus a spoon. I had no clue that would change anything! But alas, as it baked and we watched a movie, Michael, Faith's older brother entered the kitchen. He peaked in the oven to investigate the chocolaty smell arising and urgently said, "Faith? What's in the oven?" Faith calmly responded, "Brownies." While I immediately heard the urgency in his voice, leaped from the couch, and yelled, "Oh no! What's wrong with them!?" I ran to the kitchen to peak in the oven and saw, to my despare, but ultimately not surprise, that my brownies were a VERY light brown and had risen nearly 2 inches higher than the pan!!! O my. Needless to say, though the brownies were good, they sure were more cake-like than fudgy. ;-)

And no, I know nohting about blogspot give-aways)

    1. Yes, Joy! I know what you mean about how it always turns out different then the recipe says or looks, but it usually ends up tasting good any way!
Thanks for sharing that story! I enjoyed reading it! ;) We have certainly over beaten things before and it usually has an affect on the turn out! ;)

  7. One time Gabriel made us younger girls some tomato smoothy that was very unusual. Then he made some "medicine" that was a cobunction of a lot of stuff, and it had an unusual taste. A few times I've burned my cookie to black in the microwave.

  8. I haven't really had any oven failures, but definitely ones in the microwave. One time, a friend of mine was over for a sleepover, and we wanted popcorn, of course. We put the pack in microwave and pushed the very convenient popcorn button. Unfortunately the bag of popcorn was a 100 calorie pack and as a result cooked much faster than a regular bag. We did not realize this until later. My friend and I got distracted, as we always do,and suddenly looked over to the microwave, shocked to see smoke filling it. I popped open the door and ran the very black, burnt, and smoking bag outside and threw it on our deck table. I was hoping that my mother would not discover the destroyed popcorn, but the burnt stench was too strong, and she definitely noticed. So remember guys, popping popcorn can very easily become a fire hazard.
